What happens during an individual counselling session?
Individual counselling may look very different depending on the client’s preference, type of problem, and counselling techniques used. The common thread across all therapy sessions is the counsellor’s intention to help the client speak about their emotions, problems, and concerns, and process these thoughts in a healthy way guided by the therapist. Your therapist may ask you questions about your worries, or conduct psychoanalytic exercises using images or word association to gain insights into your subconscious thoughts. The therapist may also guide you in setting goals for yourself to change certain thought pattens or behavioural patterns, and help you keep track of your progress throughout the therapy sessions.
What are the different types of individual counselling?
Individual counselling, or one-to-one counselling, may involve a variety of counselling techniques and approaches. For example, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is focused on helping the client change their behaviour, and frequently used to overcome phobias, eating disorders, and addictions. Another kind of therapy, Psychodynamic therapy, encourages the client to share whatever that is on their mind, and draw connections between their past experiences, thought patterns, and current problems. Other types of therapy methods include: dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), integrative cognitive therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, Gestalt therapy, and cognitive analytical therapy. Usually, the therapist will choose a method that is suitable upon understanding your issues and goals. Different therapists will also differ in their expertise and preference of certain counselling techniques.
How do I know when I need to go for therapy?
You may find therapy beneficial if you feel stuck in an unhealthy thought cycle, or you simply wish to get professional help with understanding yourself better. You don’t need to be diagnosed with a mental health condition to benefit from therapy or counselling. Counselling at our centre in Singapore can be sought for short-term problems like work-related stress, mid-life crisis, existential questions, or grief from the loss of a loved one. Therapy can also help with unhealthy habits like addiction or anger management, and mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
How can individual counselling help me?
No therapist or counsellor can promise results or complete ‘recovery’. However, using tried-and-tested methods, therapy can help you make sense of your feelings and behaviours, and guide you towards overcoming your issue in a way that works for you. Sometimes, we are so consumed by our own feelings and get stuck in a cycle of negative thoughts. Therapists are here to help you view your problem objectively and devise long-term strategies to cope with the issue. For some people, simply talking about their problems feels liberating and validating. It is no exaggeration to say that the right therapist can transform your thinking and make you feel more secure and confident in life.
